What young farmers can do for a better climate
Climate Farmers project
Climate Farmers is a project about agriculture and climate change promoting case studies of European young farmers who recognise their reponsibility to play a part in the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of their farms. The knowledge and experience of farmers play an important part in defining best practices in this area that are both cost-efficient and effective. NAJK and CEJA have gathered practices already implemented by some young farmers which focus on dairy and arable farming. These sectors are the largest in Europe and these farming practices are carried out in all European Union (EU) Member States –therefore mitigation measures taken within these sectors should have the most significant impact on the decrease in GHG emissions on farms.
From theory to practice
European young farmers are always looking for ways to make food production more sustainable. With respect to climate change, CEJA and NAJK have gathered examples of good farming practices which have been examined in terms of GHG emissions and cost-effectiveness. These practices are already being used in some European dairy and arable farms and are aimed at reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.
Best practices
Twelve measures from four different countries (Ireland, Spain, The Netherlands, Sweden) have been selected as case studies and analysed in depth by 24 young farmers. They looked at the social and economic context of the measures, and considered whether the measures could be applied in other countries. To see the examples of best practices and the case studies please go to www.climatefarmers.eu.
A measure is qualified as a best-practice when:
- It results in a reduction of GHG emissions
- It can be easily implemented in the farm management
- It is cost-efficient
Social responsibility and awareness
By assisting the sharing of information between young farmers, CEJA will raise awareness of the fact that reducing of GHG emissions can be made possible with simple techniques. This will open the door to new ideas and help tackle the problem of climate change.
Evaluation
CEJA and NAJK are kindly asking all Members Organisations to fill in the evaluation questionnaires by your board members and all active members within your organisation who are familiar with our project. The questionnaire is available in the following six languages:
Thank you in advance for your support.
Results
The project’s results are compiled in a comprehensive booklet available in EN, FR, ES, DE, and NL entitled: ‘Climate Farmers – Good farming practices for climate change mitigation’ which is now available on the NAJK website: www.climatefarmers.eu. Should you require a hard copy of the booklet, please contact the NAJK secretariat at info@climatefarmers.eu to receive a hard copy free of charge.
